Bedding Plants & Pest Control

Bedding plants, grown primarily for their vibrant colours and compact growth habits, are especially vulnerable to a range of insect pests during propagation and production. Because these plants are often sold in retail settings or planted directly into consumer gardens, maintaining a clean, residue-free appearance is critical. Pests like thrips, whiteflies, aphids, and fungus gnats can quickly reduce plant quality by damaging leaves, buds, or roots. Biological pest control offers a targeted and gentle solution that preserves the health and appearance of bedding plants without the risk of chemical residue or phytotoxicity. Beneficial organisms such as predatory mites, parasitic wasps, and entomopathogenic nematodes can be strategically introduced to control key pests while supporting integrated pest management (IPM) programs. This approach helps growers maintain high-quality plants that meet both market and consumer expectations.

Monitoring

Yellow Horiver Wetstick cards and yellow Horiver Rollertraps are essential tools for pest management for bedding plant crops. These traps effectively monitor most flying insects, including aphids, thrips, whiteflies, moths, and fungus gnats.

For monitoring purposes, hang one card every 20-40 square meters. If your growing space is smaller, ensure there are at least 4 cards per compartment. These sticky cards are crucial for detecting pests like thrips, whiteflies, aphids, and sciarid flies. Check and assess the cards weekly to monitor pest populations.

Additionally, perform thorough crop inspections on seedlings with a whiteboard. Flip the seedling tray over the white board and brush the plants; any pests will fall onto the white board making them very easy to spot.

To increase monitoring locations, deploy Yellow Horiver Rollertraps or additional cards at a rate of 800 per acre or 100 every 500 square meters. Space them in a grid-style pattern throughout your crop at a height of 30cm.

This proactive monitoring approach is your first and most crucial line of defense—showing you when the pests first reach your plants.
